Resources for Teachers

Teaching about modern slavery and human trafficking can be electrifying for students and teachers. Expect strong reactions and deep engagement. Clearly, some material will be too much for younger age groups. I've also excluded any resources I feel are more sensational than educational. Note that the websites below will change over time.

Larry Ferlazzo teaches ESOL and EFL. He lists a great collection of news reports, video, and materials. Here is his website. Other ESOL and EFL teachers have told me that this topic gets their students going like nothing else.

New York Times - Learning Blog

Students learn about modern slavery, and how it has become one of the largest industries in the world. Using coverage by Nicholas D. Kristof, a Times columnist, they explore the causes of and consequences for victims and traffickers, the role of globalization and ways to respond effectively. Lesson Materials

Anti-Slavery International

Anti-Slavery International is the oldest and original anti-slavery group in the world. Based in London they supply UK schools with excellent lesson plans, quizzes, and resource sheets. Their teaching resources are HERE.

Canada - Alliance Against Modern Slavery

This is a superlative 'lists of lists'. See especially the Free the Slaves Study Packs, and their Documentary Film Study Packs. Historians Against Slavery are coming with more great materials all the time, their link is here too. Be sure and try the Slavery Footprint.
